Use case
Read PDFs aloud on Windows.
Long reports, research papers, contracts, textbooks — PDFs are made for the page, not for your ears. Readwave turns any PDF into audio right where you already read it: highlight the text, press a hotkey, and listen. Nothing is uploaded; the voice is generated on your own machine.

How it works
Three steps, then listen
Open your PDF anywhere
Adobe Acrobat, Edge, Chrome, your e-reader — Readwave works on top of whatever app shows the text. No importing, no separate PDF viewer to learn.
Select the text you want to hear
Highlight a paragraph, a page, or the whole section. Text-based PDFs work instantly. (Scanned image-only PDFs need OCR first — most modern readers do this automatically.)
Press Ctrl+Alt+R and listen
A natural neural voice starts reading immediately. Adjust speed, pause, or send long sections to your listen-later Queue to get through them on your own time.
Why Readwave
What makes it different
Your documents never leave your device
Confidential contracts and unpublished research stay private. Readwave's voices run locally — the text isn't sent to a server to be read.
Built for long-form reading
Even, natural voices that hold up over a 40-page paper — not robotic system speech. Queue up several documents and listen back-to-back.
Free for 20,000 words / week
Read PDFs aloud on the free tier with no account. Go Pro for unlimited reading and Smart Reading (summarize or simplify dense PDFs before you listen) — 14-day free trial.
FAQ
Good to know
- Does it work with scanned PDFs?
- Readwave reads selectable text. If your PDF is a scanned image, run it through your reader's OCR (Acrobat and Edge can do this) so the text becomes selectable, then highlight and press the hotkey.
- Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
- No. The neural voices run on your own computer, so the text you read stays on your device. Only the optional Pro Smart Reading features (summarize, translate, simplify) send text to be processed.
- Can I listen to a whole book?
- Yes — select chapter by chapter, or add sections to the Queue and play through them. Pro removes the weekly word limit for unlimited reading.
